Committee-in-a-box, not diploma-in-a-box

The honest promise

This is not a degree, and it does not confer one. No ebook can. What it does: take you to ABD — “All But Dissertation” — caliber. You will command the frontier of the field, run a real systematic literature review, design methodologically sound studies, survive an adversarial qualifying exam, and walk out holding an original, defensible research proposal you wrote yourself. The committee is in the box. The original thought is yours.

The dividing line

Master’s vs. Doctorate — the honest line

Master’s caliber

A master’s-level program teaches you what the field knows. You consume the canon, apply the frameworks, and get good at using other people’s findings.

Doctoral caliber

A doctorate teaches you to stand at the edge of what the field knows and add to it. You read the frontier, find the gap nobody has closed, design a study that could close it, and defend the whole thing against people trying to break it.

The dividing line is Tier 2 — The Literature Engine. Consuming knowledge is a master’s. Interrogating the literature until you can name an original, fundable gap is a doctorate. Everything in this program is built to get you across that line.

The architecture

Five tiers, one ladder to ABD

Each tier opens. Tier 2 is the crossing point from master’s to doctorate; Tier 4 attacks you; Tier 5 hands you a proposal you wrote yourself.

1

Tier 1 · Frontier Field Mastery

Know the frontier, not the textbook.
+

Command the live debates and who is arguing what — not the settled summary, the open front.

A master’s student learns Cialdini’s six principles. A doctoral candidate can tell you which of them replicated, which got downgraded, which got a seventh added, and who is still fighting about the mechanism. This tier maps the living field: the load-bearing theories, the running arguments, and the names on each side of them.

The Dual-Process Spine

Petty & Cacioppo’s Elaboration Likelihood Model (central vs. peripheral routes) and Chaiken’s Heuristic-Systematic Model. Where they agree, where they diverge, and why the ‘route’ metaphor is still contested. This is the theoretical backbone the whole field hangs on.

Cialdini, Audited

Reciprocity, commitment/consistency, social proof, authority, liking, scarcity — plus unity, the seventh he added in Pre-Suasion (2016). Which principles survived the replication crisis intact, which need boundary conditions, and how ‘pre-suasion’ (attention before message) reframed the whole model.

Behavioral Economics at the Border

Kahneman & Tversky’s prospect theory, loss aversion, anchoring, framing; Thaler & Sunstein’s choice architecture and ‘nudge.’ The live debate: how large and how durable are nudge effects really, after the 2022 meta-analytic corrections? Persuasion science and behavioral econ are quietly merging — know the seam.

Narrative Transportation

Green & Brock’s transportation-imagery model — why a story lowers counter-arguing in a way a bullet list never will. Connects directly to your applied backbone: the Persuasion Narrative Codex is transportation theory operationalized.

Message & Inoculation

McGuire’s inoculation theory (why a weakened counter-argument builds resistance), fear appeals (the EPPM), and the current misinformation-resistance frontier where inoculation is having a major research revival.

The Replication Reckoning

The most important thing a doctoral candidate must internalize: large parts of social psychology got shaken by the replication crisis (2011–present). Ego depletion, some priming effects, and several classic persuasion demonstrations are contested. Knowing which findings are solid vs. shaky IS frontier mastery.

Applied backbone
Your Tongue Sorcery phrase libraries are applied dual-process work: high-elaboration targets need central-route substance; low-elaboration moments are won on peripheral cues. Tier 1 teaches you to name which route each ‘spell’ is exploiting — and to defend the claim.
2

Tier 2 · The Literature Engine

The tier that separates a doctorate from a master’s.
+

Read like a scholar, run a systematic review, map the live debate, and name the gap.

This is the machine that turns a reader into a researcher. You will learn to read a paper the way an examiner reads it, run a reproducible literature search, build a synthesis matrix, and — the whole point — locate a real gap that is narrow enough to study and important enough to matter.

Reading Like a Scholar

The three-pass method: (1) skim abstract/figures/conclusion for the claim, (2) read method and results for whether the claim is earned, (3) interrogate limitations and alternative explanations. You are not reading to agree — you are reading to find the crack.

The Systematic Review Protocol

PRISMA in practice: define the question (PICO/PECO), pre-register the search, choose databases (PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar as backstop), set inclusion/exclusion criteria, screen, and log every decision so another scholar could reproduce your search. This is what makes a review a review and not a book report.

The Synthesis Matrix

Build a grid: rows = studies, columns = construct, sample, method, effect, limitation. When it’s full, the debate becomes visible — who found what, under what conditions, and where the findings collide. Contradictions in the matrix are gap candidates.

Mapping the Live Debate

Every mature literature has factions. Learn to draw the argument map: claim, counter-claim, the evidence each side leans on, and the unresolved crux. A dissertation lives inside an unresolved crux.

The Gap Taxonomy

Not all gaps are dissertations. Evidence gaps (untested), population gaps (untested on whom), methodological gaps (tested badly), theoretical gaps (mechanism unexplained), and contextual gaps (works here, unknown there). Learn to tell a fundable gap from a trivial one.

From Gap to Question

Convert the gap into a researchable question that is specific, feasible, and consequential — then a falsifiable hypothesis. If you can’t state what result would prove you wrong, you don’t have a hypothesis yet.

Applied backbone
The FELT Sale is a field-tested claim. In Tier 2 you treat it as a literature object: what construct is it? (affect-as-information? processing fluency?) What does the existing evidence predict? Where is the gap between what FELT asserts and what the published record has actually tested? That gap is a dissertation seed.
3

Tier 3 · Methods

The instrument tier. Rigor you can defend.
+

Design studies that survive a methodologist’s attack — real experiments, real validity, real reproducibility.

Persuasion is an experimental science. This tier gives you the instruments: how to design a study whose results actually mean something, and how to spot the flaws that let a persuasive-sounding result be worthless.

Experimental Design

Randomization, control and comparison conditions, between- vs. within-subjects, factorial designs, manipulation checks. Why random assignment is the thing that buys you causal inference — and why an A/B test without it is just a comparison.

The Four Validities

Internal (did the manipulation cause the effect?), external (does it generalize?), construct (did you measure what you meant?), and statistical-conclusion validity. Every threat has a name; a doctoral candidate can list them for their own design before an examiner does.

A/B Testing With Rigor

The bridge from lab to practice. Power analysis before you run (not p-hacking after), fixed sample sizes, one primary metric, sequential-testing corrections, and why ‘peeking’ inflates false positives. Most marketing A/B tests would be rejected by a methods committee — learn why, and do better.

Measurement & Scales

Reliability (Cronbach’s alpha, test-retest), validity of instruments, established persuasion scales (attitude, intention, source credibility). Measuring ‘persuasion’ is harder than it looks; bad measurement sinks good designs.

Statistics for Inference

Effect sizes over bare p-values, confidence intervals, the New Statistics, mediation (does the message change the attitude that changes behavior?) and moderation (for whom does it work?). Enough to read a results section critically and to plan your own analysis.

The Reproducibility Toolkit

Pre-registration, open data and materials, the difference between exploratory and confirmatory analysis, the garden of forking paths. Post-2011, this is not optional ethics garnish — it is the price of admission to credible influence science.

Applied backbone
Every Tongue Sorcery ‘spell’ is a testable hypothesis wearing a costume. Tier 3 teaches you to strip the costume: state the causal claim, design the experiment that would confirm or kill it, name the validity threats, and pre-register. That is the difference between a copywriter’s hunch and an influence scientist’s finding.
4

Tier 4 · Comprehensive Exam Simulation

Adversarial self-quals. The committee attacks; you defend.
+

Survive the qualifying exam. Each objection is an examiner’s challenge you must answer under pressure.

Before a doctoral candidate may propose research, they must pass comprehensive exams — a committee attacking their command of the field to see if it holds. This tier simulates that using the Sumo-Librarian anti-objection format: each challenge is a real examiner’s move, and you learn the identity-anchor, the memory move, and the defensible answer. Objections here are not sales objections — they are the field’s hardest questions turned against you.

How to use: cover the model answer. Speak your defense aloud first. Then check. A defense you can only recognize is not a defense you can deliver in the room.

EXAMINER 01
“Cialdini’s principles are pop science. Defend them as rigorous.”
Your defense
Anchor: I don’t defend all six equally. Reciprocity and scarcity have robust experimental and field support; the ‘commitment’ line has documented boundary conditions; some classic demonstrations have weaker replication records. A doctoral answer distinguishes the well-supported principles from the contested ones and cites the meta-analytic evidence rather than the trade book. The pop-science charge fails against a candidate who knows exactly which claims are load-bearing.
EXAMINER 02
“Your whole field may not have survived the replication crisis. Why should we trust any of it?”
Your defense
Anchor: The replication crisis is a feature of my mastery, not a hole in it. I can partition the literature into (a) findings that replicated in large multi-lab efforts, (b) findings downgraded to ‘context-dependent,’ and (c) findings I treat as folklore until re-tested. Prospect theory and core dual-process findings are sturdy; several priming and depletion effects are not. A candidate who can draw that map is exactly what the post-2011 field needs.
EXAMINER 03
“The ELM is unfalsifiable — any result can be explained by ‘route.’ Respond.”
Your defense
Anchor: This is the strongest critique of the ELM and I take it seriously. The defense is that the model makes directional predictions when elaboration is measured or manipulated independently — e.g., argument quality matters more under high elaboration, peripheral cues more under low. The risk of unfalsifiability is real when ‘route’ is inferred post hoc from the outcome. My design avoids that by measuring elaboration independently of the persuasion outcome.
EXAMINER 04
“Show me your gap is real and not just under-read. How do you know someone hasn’t already done this?”
Your defense
Anchor: Because my systematic search is reproducible. I pre-registered the query, searched PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus with documented terms and dates, screened against explicit criteria, and logged the yield. The gap is what survived that funnel. If an examiner names a paper I missed, I can show whether my criteria excluded it and why — that is the difference between an unread gap and a defensible one.
EXAMINER 05
“Your proposed experiment has a confound. Find it before I do.”
Your defense
Anchor: Good — let me attack my own design. Most likely threats in a persuasion experiment: demand characteristics (participants guess the hypothesis), a failed or unchecked manipulation, a construct-validity slip where my ‘persuasion’ measure taps compliance instead of attitude change, and selection effects if assignment wasn’t truly random. I name my prime suspect, state the control that neutralizes it, and note the residual limitation honestly. Pretending a design is airtight is the tell of a master’s student.
EXAMINER 06
“This is just marketing dressed as science. Where’s the theory?”
Your defense
Anchor: The applied surface sits on a theoretical spine. My intervention makes a mechanism claim — it should work because of narrative transportation reducing counter-argument, or because of processing fluency raising perceived truth. I state the mechanism, derive a prediction that would differ if the mechanism were wrong, and test that. Application without a falsifiable mechanism is marketing; application with one is science.
EXAMINER 07
“Defend the ethics. You are teaching people to influence others.”
Your defense
Anchor: Influence is not the ethical variable — consent, transparency, and whose interest is served are. The field distinguishes persuasion (reasoned, resistible, disclosed) from manipulation (covert, exploiting bias against interest). My work commits to the former and studies the latter to build resistance — which is why inoculation research matters. The karma line is not decoration: gieo nhân nào, gặt quả đó — influence taken without conscience is a debt repaid with lost trust.
5

Tier 5 · Proposal & Capstone

Committee-in-a-box. You supply the original thought.
+

Produce a genuine, original research proposal — and a real contribution you could defend.

The honest boundary: this program cannot write your dissertation, and it will not pretend to. What it does is act as your committee — it teaches, structures, and pressure-tests, then hands you the scaffold. The original idea is yours. By the end of this tier you will hold a complete, defensible proposal.

The Proposal Skeleton

The five load-bearing sections every proposal defends: (1) the problem and why it matters, (2) the literature and the gap, (3) the research question and hypotheses, (4) the method, sample, and analysis plan, (5) the anticipated contribution and limitations. Build each in order; each is stress-tested against Tier 4.

Stating the Contribution

A doctorate requires an ‘original contribution to knowledge.’ Learn the four honest kinds: a new finding, a new method, a new synthesis, or a new application rigorously tested. Name yours in one sentence — if you can’t, keep working.

The Analysis Plan

Pre-specify the analysis before data exists: primary hypothesis test, effect-size target, power, and the mediation/moderation you predict. This is what turns a proposal from a wish into a study.

The Committee-in-a-Box Defense

Run your own proposal through all seven Tier-4 examiners plus a methods attack from Tier 3. Where it survives, you have a defensible proposal. Where it breaks, you have your revision list. Iterate until it holds.

The Capstone Artifact

The deliverable: a complete written research proposal in the standard structure, plus a one-page ‘defense brief’ anticipating the three hardest questions. This is the thing you walk out with — real, yours, and defensible.

Applied backbone
The most natural capstone for a reader of this program: take one of your own field claims — the FELT Sale, a Tongue Sorcery mechanism, the Persuasion Narrative Codex’s transportation bet — and turn it into a registered, testable study. You already have the applied claim. This tier turns it into science.

Your IP on the lab bench

Your applied IP, upgraded to research objects

This program does not replace your frameworks — it puts them on the lab bench. Each becomes a testable object inside the doctoral machine.

Tongue Sorcery

The phrase libraries become a dual-process test-bed — every ‘spell’ is a causal hypothesis you can design an experiment around (Tier 3).

The Persuasion Narrative Codex

Operationalized narrative-transportation theory. Tier 1 places it in the literature; Tier 5 turns its central bet into a registered study.

The FELT Sale

A field claim about affect and fluency — in Tier 2 it becomes a literature object with a locatable gap; in Tier 5, a proposal.

The Sumo-Librarian

Your anti-objection engine IS the qualifying-exam format — Tier 4 repurposes it to defend against the field’s hardest challenges.

The honest comparison

Why this exists — the honest comparison

The market sells you either a trade paperback or a $60,000 program. Here is exactly what each does and doesn’t give you.

The optionWhat they give youWhat this program does instead
Cialdini — Influence / Pre-Suasion (books)The canon, beautifully written — but a summary of settled findings, no methods, no literature engine, no way to produce original work.Uses the canon as Tier-1 raw material, then teaches you to audit and extend it.
University persuasion courses (Coursera/edX)Solid master’s-level consumption of frameworks; graded quizzes; no gap-finding, no proposal, no adversarial quals.Crosses the Tier-2 line into doctoral territory: gap, method, proposal.
Vanessa Van Edwards / Science of PeopleCharismatic applied tactics for individuals; light on the primary literature and near-zero research methodology.Keeps the applied edge but grounds every tactic in falsifiable theory.
Chris Voss / Black Swan (negotiation)Elite negotiation training — a subdomain, tactically deep, not a research program in influence science.Situates negotiation inside the broader field and its methods.
Jonah Berger / Wharton exec coursesExcellent research-backed marketing at executive price — teaches you to apply findings, not to generate them.Teaches you to be the one who generates the findings.
BJ Fogg — Behavior Design Boot CampPowerful behavior-design model and certification; a framework to apply, not a doctoral literature-and-methods track.Complements Fogg with the frontier map, methods, and quals he doesn’t cover.
Copywriting/persuasion gurus ($$$ courses)Tactics and swipe files, often with fabricated proof and invented testimonials.Fabricated proof stripped on principle — you learn to demand evidence, not manufacture it.
An actual PhD programThe real thing — and the real cost: 5–7 years, tuition or funded servitude, committee politics, geographic uprooting.ABD-caliber field mastery and the proposal machinery — honestly not the degree, honestly a fraction of the time and cost.
AI ‘write my thesis’ toolsGenerate text that looks like scholarship and contains no original thought or defensible method.Refuses to fake the contribution — it pressure-tests the thinking you supply.
Committee-in-a-box, not diploma-in-a-box. We teach and pressure-test to ABD caliber. The original thought — the thing a doctorate is actually for — stays yours.

Fit check

Who this is built for

Not for: Not for someone who wants a shortcut to a credential, a swipe file of manipulation tricks, or a machine to write their thinking for them. This program refuses all three.

Objection pre-frame

Before you ask

Is this a real PhD?

No, and anyone selling you one in an ebook is lying. This takes you to ABD caliber — field mastery plus the proposal machinery — and says so plainly.

Do I need a research background?

No. The program builds the reading, methods, and review skills from the ground up. It assumes intelligence and effort, not a prior degree.

Will it write my proposal for me?

No. It is committee-in-a-box: it teaches, structures, and attacks your thinking. The original idea has to be yours — that is the whole point of a doctorate.

How is this different from the free stuff online?

Free content gives you scattered summaries. This gives you the ordered doctoral machine — frontier map, literature engine, methods, adversarial quals, and a proposal you finish holding.
